RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2018

Subscribe now to see our 2018 outlook.

2017

It's all relative, but Gimenez has discovered a touch of power over the past two seasons. After knocking six home runs over his first six years and 508 plate appearances of partial play, he has hit nine homers in 268 plate appearances since the start of 2015. Late-career power spike aside, this is still a 34-year-old backup catcher who couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag last season and who may go undrafted in 15-team leagues with two catcher spots to fill. He was brought up from the minors when Roberto Perez went on the DL and stayed with the team all season, striking out in more than a quarter of his plate appearances. He'll have the opportunity to compete with John Ryan Murphy for the backup catcher position in Minnesota, but his fantasy relevance is minimal even if he does crack the major league roster.

2016

Gimenez was called up in late July and got in 36 games down the stretch as injuries thinned Texas' catching depth, and he proceeded to slug .490 with five homers and 10 walks in 98 at-bats. It was way out of line with anything he had done in the majors prior, but it was enough for Texas to bring him back on a one-year contract for 2016. He figures to open the year in the role of backup catcher, as the Rangers thinned out their organizational depth with the trading of Jorge Alfaro to Philadelphia. Gimenez has been Yu Darvish's personal catcher in the past, which could also work towards his sticking on the big league roster all season.

2015

The Rangers plucked Gimenez off waivers from the A's days before the start of the season, seeking depth after Geovany Soto went down with a knee injury. GM Jon Daniels was forced to designated Gimenez for assignment less than a week later following another waiver acquisition, but he brought him back on a minor league deal shortly thereafter, and Gimenez would earn a promotion to the big club in late May. Serving as the exclusive catcher for Yu Darvish and backup to Robinson Chirinos, Gimenez hit .262/.331/.355 in 34 games before being sent to Cleveland in a post-deadline waiver deal. He went 0-for-9 while with the Indians, but the Rangers liked him enough to bring him back on another minor league deal in November, perhaps to serve as Darvish's personal catcher yet again. As a 24-year-old in 2007, Gimenez hit 26 homers in the lower levels of the minors, but the power has all but evaporated in recent years and he's unlikely to have fantasy utility in such a limited role.

2014

Gimenez essentially served as the third catcher for the Rays, playing all but four games with Triple-A Durham in 2013. He took a step back and struggled at the plate, hitting .224/.350/.305 with three home runs and 22 RBI, but showed solid plate discipline by taking 57 walks in 375 plate appearances. Claimed off waivers by the A's in December, Gimenez will attempt to stick around at the big league level, despite a crowded depth chart behind the plate in Oakland.

2013

Gimenez spent the majority of 2012 at Triple-A Durham as the third catcher in the Rays' system. In the minors he had a strong year, hitting .310/.389/.483 with 10 home runs and 49 RBI. In addition to catching, he has experience playing both corner outfield and infield spots. He did not have his best performance in the beginning of the season at the big league level filling in for an injured Jose Lobaton, but returned in a September callup with a hot bat (1.066 OPS in 18 games). The Rays could look into adding a veteran catcher, but for now Gimenez will likely stay around Triple-A with Jose Molina and Jose Lobaton ahead of him on the organizational depth chart.

2012

Gimenez provided quality catching depth for the Mariners last season and likely will reprise that role again this year. With Miguel Olivo and John Jaso handling the catching duty, though, Giminez likely will have to hang out at Triple-A Tacoma until he's needed (discounting the unlikely event that Mariners carry three catchers). Adam Moore, who missed nearly all last season with an injury, is in the mix, as well.

2010

Gimenez had been playing the role of organizational soldier, serving every role other than team barber, for the better part of five years before finally getting the call in 2009. He's a career .267/.380/.463 hitter in the minors, but hasn't done any damage above Double-A and hit just .144 in 111 at-bats for the Indians. He can play catcher, first base, third base and the corner outfield spots without embarrassing himself so he figures to give the Indians a cheap, jack-of-all-trades option in a utility role.
