RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Kodi Medeiros.
Medeiros has tantalizing potential, but at his third level in three years, he has still yet to deliver results. Elevation to High-A Brevard County did nothing to help his game, as Medeiros struck out just one more batter (64) than he walked (63) over 85 innings. Medeiros' pitches have incredible life, and that's why the Brewers drafted him in the first round and have kept pushing him up the minor league ladder. He didn't allow a single home run in 93.1 innings at Low-A Wisconsin in 2015, an impressive feat. Medeiros has the stuff to be a starter in the top half of a first division rotation, but if he can't figure out his control, he could easily find himself relegated to a bullpen role, and 2016 was a definite step in the wrong direction.
In his first season with Low-A Wisconsin, Medeiros saw mixed results in his mixed roles. He appeared in nine games as a reliever and 16 games as a starter, finishing the season with an aggregate ERA of 4.44 and a 1.28 WHIP. Despite the rough appearance, this was actually an improvement from his Arizona League numbers. He also struck out over a batter per inning and didn't give up a homer all season. Medeiros is still one of the top prospects in the Brewers' system, and at a mere 19 years old, he has the potential to be an impact pitcher for the Brewers in the future, whether he's a starter or a reliever.
The Brewers selected Medeiros with the 12th pick in last year’s draft. He possesses three pitches, including a mid-90s fastball and a biting slider. His control needs some work, and his size could limit him down the road, but he should be able to strike out advanced hitters with just his fastball-slider combination alone. Medeiros did not get off to hot start at the professional level, but he did strike out 26 batters in 17.1 innings with the Brewers’ rookie league club last season, and is one of the team’s better prospects already.
