RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews signed a contract with the Alouettes on Tuesday, Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette reports.

Mathews spent last season with Toronto, playing in just four games as a reserve. However, he was let go in mid-May, which opens up the opportunity for him to head to Montreal. The Alouettes have temporarily lost backup quarterback Matthew Shiltz to a back injury and fellow reserve signal caller Antonio Pipkin (back) is dealing with an injury of his own as well, so Mathews provides some much-needed depth as Montreal heads into its regular-season opener on Saturday against BC.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

The Argonauts released Mathews on Wednesday, CFL.ca reports.

Mathews served as a reserve quarterback for Toronto in 2017, appearing in four games (one start) and completed eight of 12 passes for 67 yards. With Ricky Ray, James Franklin and McLeod Bethel-Thompson ahead of him on the depth chart in Toronto heading into the upcoming campaign, Mathews was deemed expandable and will now aim to win a backup role elsewhere around the league.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews is inactive for Saturday's game against the Eskimos.

There's little reason for Mathews to be active, as he's the team's No. 3 quarterback option at best. Ricky Ray will get the start.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews (undisclosed) is listed on the Argonauts' depth chart ahead of Saturday's game against the Tiger-Cats.

Mathews was placed on the injured list last week for an undisclosed reason, but he makes his return as the team's No. 4 quarterback in Week 15.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews was placed on the injured list for Week 14.

It's not clear why Mathews was placed on the injured list, but he will be unavailable this week. He was replaced on the roster by McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews will not play during Saturday's contest against the Alouettes, Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette reports.

Mathews is a healthy scratch for Saturday's tilt after being replaced in the second half of last week's game. Before being benched, he completed eight of 12 passes for 67 yards. Recent events seemingly don't bode well for his fantasy value.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews completed eight of 12 passes for 67 yards before being replaced by Cody Fajardo at the half in Friday's 21-9 loss to the Alouettes.

Fajardo wasn't a whole lot better but was at least able to keep the chains moving with his legs, something Mathews isn't capable of doing. Facing the Als in Montreal was a very tough assignment for the 25-year-old in his first start as an Argo, but if Ricky Ray (shoulder) remains sidelined for next week's rematch in Toronto, Mathews could get the start once again.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews is listed as the starting quarterback for Friday's matchup with the Alouettes.

Toronto's regular starting quarterback, Ricky Ray (shoulder), will be unable to play this week, and Mathews will get the start in his place instead of Cody Fajardo, who up to this point is the only other Toronto quarterback to take a snap this season. Mathews has appeared in just one game since 2015 and his career 7:9 TD:INT is hardly inspiring, but he will at least have an opportunity to put up some numbers this week, as the Argonauts' 339.1 passing yards per game is nearly 30 yards more than the next closest squad.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews saw the bulk of the reps under center at Wednesday's practice, TSN's David Naylor reports.

The Argonauts announced Wednesday that starting quarterback Ricky Ray would not play this week due to his shoulder injury, and Wednesday's practice alignment indicates it will be Mathews getting the start in Ray's place, and not Cody Fajardo, who has been right behind Ray on the depth chart all season. Head coach Marc Trestman will officially announce his starting quarterback for Week 8 on Thursday.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews is inactive for Saturday's matchup against the Roughriders.

As the Argonaut's third-string QB, there's little reason to activate him on a regular basis. He'll sit out Saturday's game as a result.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews will be inactive for Monday's game against the Redblacks, Tim Baines of Postmedia reports.

Mathews continues to work as the Argonauts' third-string quarterback, so there's no real reason to have him active Monday. Unless in injury occurs to either Ricky Ray or Cody Fajardo, it's unlikely Mathews will be active for gamedays moving forward.

July 13, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews was scratched from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Blue Bombers.

Mathews is the Argonauts' third-string quarterback, so the team decided to deactivate him Thursday. Ricky Ray will start at quarterback like he usually does and Cody Fajardo will back him up.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mathews signed with the Argonauts on Monday.

Mathews spent three seasons with the Argonauts, but is coming off a 2016 campaign where he appeared in just one game and three for 201 yards, one touchdown and an interception. He will provide some depth at the quarterback position for Toronto in 2017 and likely won't play a major role in their offense barring any injuries.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Matthews took over from Zach Collaros after one quarter Saturday, completing 18 of 29 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown with one interception in a loss to the Alouettes.

With Hamilton having already locked up their playoff spot regardless of the outcome of the game, they elected to give Collaros and other starters plenty of rest and provide Matthews with his first action of the season. He'll return to the bench behind Collaros next Sunday when the Ti-Cats host Edmonton in the Eastern Semifinal.
