Montano (foot) remains without a title defense scheduled, Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com reports.
Montano became the inaugural 125-pound champion with her victory over Roxanne Modafferi at the TUF 26 Finale in December, but underwent surgery to repair a broken foot shortly afterwards. Fast forward nearly six months, and the flyweight champion remains without a fight booked. According to Helwani, the UFC had been targeting a matchup against Valentina Shevchenko on a July 28 card in Calgary, but they have since moved on to other options. Should a fight with a well-established veteran in Shevchenko ever materialize, look for Montano to enter as a massive betting underdog. Shevchenko is a former bantamweight title contender that has beaten every opponent the UFC has lined up for her, with the lone exception of current champion Amanda Nunes (twice).

Fantasy AnalysisMontano recently defeated Roxanne Modafferi at the TUF 26 Finale to become the inaugural UFC Women's Flyweight Champion just last weekend. During this bout, and for the last few months, she's been dealing with a broken foot, which has restricted her ability to train, cut weight and fight properly. Although this makes her victory against Modafferi even more impressive, it means that she will need to take some time off to rehab and recover following the surgery. There will likely be an update on her status once the procedure has been completed and a timetable for her recovery is established.
Fantasy AnalysisMontano became the first UFC Women's Flyweight Champion with a decision victory over veteran Roxanne Modafferi. Her original opponent, Sijara Eubanks, missed weight, so Modafferi stepped in. The change did not end up keeping the title away from Montano. She got the better of the striking exchanges despite heavy pressure from Modafferi. In the later round, Montano took over with her wrestling and left no doubt that she would walk out of the cage as champion. The new champion had to overcome adversity in the final round as Modafferi nearly forced the tap with a locked on armbar. However, the Fit NHB product held on to make the final bell and eventually become champion. She wins the UFC belt in only her sixth professional belt. She clearly has room to grow, but she will now have to do said growing against top contenders.
Fantasy AnalysisInstead of matching up against Eubanks, who defeated Modafferi during a semifinal bout of this tournament, Montano will now meet "the Happy Warrior" in the first ever women's flyweight championship. Montano will enter with a 4-2 career record while Modafferi is 21-13, and comes in with six victories in her previous eight fights.
